Spring Plumbing Checklist

Spring has sprung! As warmer weather approaches, it’s time to think about a little more than just cleaning. The season is also a good time to assess and maintain your plumbing system. Regular maintenance can help to decrease the chances of serious problems with your system and prevent costly damage and a visit from a professional.  Read on to check out our spring plumbing maintenance checklists for both the indoors and outdoors.

Indoor Checklist

  1. Inspect (and potentially drain) your water heater for wear, leaks, damage, and needed repairs.
  2. After rain or snowmelt, inspect your garage or basement walls for signs of moisture, cracks or leaks.
  3. Remove water stains with half a lemon for a quick faucet facelift.
  4. Thoroughly clean your garbage disposal to reduce the risk of future clogs.
  5. Inspect the grout and caulk around sinks, tubs, and showers, and repair or replace the damaged areas.
  6. Clean your showerheads to reduce mineral buildup and mold.
  7. Inspect your washing machine and ice dispenser hoses, replace if needed.
  8. Bonus! Install a water alarm to protect your home against flooding caused by spring storms or failing appliances.

Outdoor Checklist:

  1. Clean out your gutters and downspouts.
  2. Check your crawl space for water accumulation, excessive moisture, and debris.
  3. Learn how to check a water meter to find plumbing leaks.
  4. Flush your sprinkler system and check it for leaks. Make sure that your sprinkler heads are aimed properly and do not spray the walls of your house.
  5. Check the valve where water enters your house, outdoor faucets, and valves to toilets. Turn each off and on several times to identify leaks.
  6. Remove temporary cold-weather insulation, such as pipe jackets and faucet covers.
  7. Plan around underground plumbing when planting new trees, landscaping, or installing sprinkler systems.
